Abstract
The California Youth Council, as a formal mechanism for youth to express concerns and make recommendations on drug abuse and its prevention to the Department of Alcohol and Drug programs, is described. Summaries are provided of alcohol- and drug-related legislation, including bills dealing with substance abuse education in elementary and secondary schools, pilot projects for at-risk youth, teacher education, and school/community prevention programming. Availability is noted of a State model products report that covers such products as certification and licensing standards for substance abuse and treatment programs and services, intervention training, and program monitoring. A school-based program, New Connections, is described that provides the community with prevention and counseling programs, peer presentations, group discussions, and family interventions. The operation of the on-line drug abuse information and monitoring project, a public-access electronic bulletin board, is explained. Listings also are provided of State training services for County drug programs and proposed projects including youth and prevention conferences, treatment outcome evaluations, and information dissemination. A calendar of events also is included. Photograph.
