This report presents the California Department of Corrections' (CDC) projections of inmate, parole, and outpatient populations for fiscal year 1996-97 through the year 2001-02, based on the most current available data and existing law.
Abstract
The discussion notes that the population in CDC institutions continues to increase, although the rate of increase has slowed in recent years. The fall 1996 forecast projected a total inmate population of 146,475 by December 31, 1991, a number 910 higher than the actual population. The difference was largely due to overestimating the number of parole violators returned with new terms. The prison population is expected to be 149,682 by June 30, 1997 and 198,435 by June 30, 2002. The parole population is projected at 103,312 for June 30, 1997 and 125,107 by June 30, 2002. Other projections cover the civil narcotic addict population, the parole/outpatient population, and felon admissions. Figures and tables
