Abstract
The text explains the different types of protection available, such as intrusion, fire, and medical. It describes the components of an alarm system: master control panel; battery backup systems; access panels; switches; sensors for perimeters, areas, and special protection; tamper switches; and alarms and transmitting devices. The book shows how to plan a system and install the components, focusing on permits and licenses; finding, choosing, and purchasing components; and installing and wiring the system. A final chapter discusses professionally installed alarm systems, noting how to choose an alarm company; questions to ask about components, installation, and central station monitoring; and how to purchase a system for the home. Paying for the alarm system, the Underwriters Laboratories and the security industry, and how to conduct a final walk-through of the purchased system are also explained. Other topics covered in the guide include home insurance savings and income tax advantages. Diagrams, illustrations, floor plans, a glossary, and a topical index are supplied.
