This manual describes the data elements of the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) File (PROFILE) System for 1968-78, which consists of the automated storage and retrieval of information on BJS-sponsored programs.
Abstract
Basic data elements include grant title, grantee and project location, critical funding dates, government level and type of grantee, financial data, project director's name, availability of the reports, and appropriate identification numbers. Program descriptors make up the second type of data elements. These elements, which form the program classification system, describe the key characteristics of the program: its subject; its primary and secondary activity; whether it affects a juvenile or adult problem; and what crimes, clients, staff, program strategies, agencies, equipment, or research methods are to be affected by the project. A chart for the subgrant data base file layout provides the record and block lengths, the field name, field length, number of occurrences, total length, and start position. An appendix presents subgrant field definitions.
