Responding to existing research which found evidence that those students who are or are perceived to be a sexual minority are frequent targets of bullying, this paper conducted a literature review to examine the causes and factors contributing to the victimization of sexual minority youth or the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning and inter-sex (GLBTQI) youth and the future need for research examining homophobic bullying in schools.
Abstract
Previous research shows that schools are not a safe place for sexual minority youth. Many changes need to occur in order for schools to function as protective and secure learning environments for sexual minorities. In order to help sexual minority youth, educators must monitor incidents of bullying and aggression, encourage respect for all individuals, and be willing to intervene and provide support for victims of bullying. This paper seeks to identify and respond to research gaps by (1) reviewing existing literature about the causes and risk factors associated with the homophobic bullying, (2) reviewing existing literature about the consequences associated with the victims of sexual minority bullying, (3) identifying the limitations to research procedures and methodologies that have been used to investigate this topic, and (4) proposing a research agenda for future investigations of homophobic bullying in schools.
