This study investigated school bullying among public high school students in Turkey.
Abstract
Bullying among Turkish high school students was found to be an issue of concern in all the schools studied. Even though the majority of bullies were boys, there were instances of bullying by girls. Research shows that bullying has negative consequences on students’ psychological health and school performance. It is recommended that a national prevention and intervention policy be developed to ensure the safety of students. This study is the first of its kind in Turkey. It investigated the occurrence of bullying among 692 Turkish high school students during the 2000-2001 academic year. All of the students reported having been bullied either physically, verbally, emotionally, and sexually, from these four types of bullying the most common forms were pushing, and name-calling. It is expected that the results of this study will raise awareness of students, teachers, principals, educational managers, parents, and the Turkish community about bullying in schools.
