This bulletin describes the objectives, methodologies, and findings of seven 1990 criminal justice research projects in Japan.
Abstract
One research project analyzed the trial records of 209 cases of family homicide that occurred in and after 1975 and were adjudicated by 1987. Emphasis was upon offender-victim relationships and sentence severity. Another project analyzed various types of consumer fraud that occurred over a 15-year period. The study focused on the circumstances preceding the fraud and offender characteristics. Another study identified the characteristics of frequently imprisoned offenders compared with rehabilitated offenders, followed by a report on research that identified the extent of norm consciousness among delinquent boys and its change in the course of correctional programs. Juveniles' decisions to join or withdraw from gangs are examined in other research, along with differences in the characteristics between juvenile delinquents who do and do not join gangs. Two other research projects address the progress of adult probationers and the features of juvenile probationers and their effective supervision.
