This kit offers small businesses introductory resources and information to aid in making the workplace alcohol and drug free.
Abstract
To aid small businesses in benefiting from drug-free workplace programs and to maintain safe, healthy and productive workplaces, the U.S. Department of Labor developed the Working Partners for an Alcohol and Drug-Free Workplace. This workplace kit designed by Working Partners offers small businesses the necessary tools, resources, and information to assist them in creating an alcohol and drug-free workplace. The kit begins with a blueprint for an effective and comprehensive alcohol and drug-free workplace program which consists of five components: (1) drug-free workplace policy; (2) supervisor training; (3) employee education; (4) employee assistance; and (5) drug-testing. The kit continues with information on web-based resources to help employers establish or expand programs, resources for establishing or expanding workplace programs, an outline of the advantages and benefits for workplace programs from both the employer’s and employee’s perspective, statistics about drug and alcohol abuse and it’s impact on the workplace, and fact sheets on workplace substance abuse across a range of industries such as construction, health care, high-tech, retail, and transportation.
