Abstract

BJS collects, analyzes, publishes, and disseminates statistical information on crime, crime victims, offenders, and justice system operations at all governmental levels; provides financial and technical support to State statistical and operating agencies; and analyzes national information policy on such issues as the privacy, confidentiality, and security of criminal justice data and the interstate exchange of criminal records. The report presents recent data on the following aspects of crime: crime trends, crime volume, violent crime, crime victims, victim-offender relationship, crime weapons, crime location, and crime against District of Columbia residents and Capitol Hill employees. Data on various types of crime cover robbery, domestic violence against women, rape, household burglary, bank robbery, and automated teller machine loss and theft. Other data cover various topics related to drugs; crime costs; the public response to crime; adjudication and sentencing; corrections; recidivism and career criminals; and privacy, security, and confidentiality of criminal justice data. 86 source notes
