Interviews with physicians, medical researchers, public health officials, and AIDS victims counter irrational fears about AIDS with accurate information about the disease and suggestions on preventing its spread.
Abstract
The video first discusses the virus that causes AIDS and common symptoms such as pneumonia and rare cancers. Difficulties faced by researchers in finding a vaccine are examined. In describing the test developed to detect the virus in blood, the narrator emphasizes that all blood in donor centers is screened for AIDS and that donors face no risk of infection. An overview of groups infected with AIDS notes that transmission through needle sharing by drug users is spreading AIDS into the heterosexual community. The danger of contracting AIDS from prostitutes is highlighted. The video also emphasizes that AIDS is not transmitted through casual contact. Other issues covered include children who have contracted AIDS from their mothers, fears about AIDS in the workplace, sending children with AIDS to school, and support systems for AIDS victims and their families. Finally, both victims and physicians urge the use of condoms and avoidance of casual sex to prevent AIDS.
