Abstract
Prosecutors have used their positions as elected or appointed officials and criminal justice policymakers to provide community leadership to address their jurisdictions' drug problems. This study identifies drug-control or demand- reduction programs that involve or are led by prosecutors and documents these programs. Programs for future evaluation efforts are also identified. To develop a sample of prosecutors' offices that are involved in community-based, antidrug programs, researchers sent an initial screening survey to an estimated 2,800 prosecutors' offices throughout the country. Prosecutors' offices with such programs were asked to provide information on the type of program, contact person, and telephone number. Telephone interviews were conducted with 151 prosecutors' offices to obtain detailed program information. Fifteen site visits were also conducted. This report contains case studies and program briefs on 36 antidrug abuse programs and includes the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of individuals to contact for more information. The programs are presented under the following categories: enforcement, nuisance abatement and eviction, education and prevention, diversion to treatment, community coalitions, special issues, and the identification of resources. The report encourages the adoption and modification of programs or specific activities within a highlighted program that may address the particular problems and circumstances in their jurisdictions.
