Abstract
Scientific studies and the author's experiences with child sexual abuse cases document the extent of the problem. This discussion focuses on molestation within the family, although abuse of children by individuals outside the family is addressed. The causes of sexual abuse are examined, as are the effects on the victim from the initial molestation, the mid-range impact on the victim and the family if the abuse continues, and long-term effects. Other chapters consider the underreported problem of males as child sexual abuse victims and detail behavioral indicators of abuse for children, adolescents, and adults. Family indicators of child sexual abuse and physical signs are listed. The book provides practical guidelines on handling victims without causing further emotional damage. Also explored are treatment options and prevention strategies, namely education and open communication between parents and children. Suggestions for choosing caregivers are included. References and a list of child sexual abuse treatment programs.
