THE BOOK IS INTENDED TO DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF BEHAVIOR WITHIN ORGANIZATIONS; IT IS ALSO CONCERNED WITH THE IMPACT ON INDIVIDUALS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND CULTURE OF RAPIDLY ACCELERATING CHANGE.
Abstract
VARIOUS PERSPECTIVES ON MANAGEMENT ARE FIRST DISCUSSED, PARTICULARLY STRUCTURAL-DESIGN, WORK-FLOW, HUMAN, AND INTERGRATED PERSPECTIVES. THE ORGANIZATION AS A MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IS THEN EXAMINED, ALONG WITH GENERAL SYSTEMS THEORY, THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THE SYSTEMS APPROACH, CHARACTERISTICS OF HUMAN ORGANIZATION, DIFFERING PERSPECTIVES ON ORGANIZATIONS AS SOCIAL SYSTEMS, AND THE NEED FOR MORE INTEGRATED APPROACHES. THE FOLLOWING CHAPTERS DETAIL THE MICRO VIEW OF INTRAORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR. THE INDIVIDUAL IN THE ORGANIZATION; INTERPERSONAL PERCEPTIONS AND COMMUNICATION; THE GROUP ROLE IN ORGANIZATION; GROUPS IN INTERACTION; INFLUENCE, POWER, AND LEADERSHIP; AND THE ROLE OF THE MANAGER IN THE ORGANIZATION ARE DISCUSSED. FINALLY, THE MACRO VIEW OF ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR IS EXAMINED. CLIMATE, ENVIRONMENT, AND ORGANIZATIONAL PLANNING; ORGANIZATIONAL IMPROVEMENT FROM THE STRUCTURAL-DESIGN AND WORK-FLOW PERSPECTIVES; ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT FROM THE HUMAN PERSPECTIVE; AN INTERGRATED SYSTEMS THEORY OF ORGANIZATION DEVELOPMENT; AND THE INTERGRATED STUDY OF ORGANIZATION DEVELOPMENT ARE CONSIDERED. CASE STUDIES ARE APPENDED WHICH CONCERN: CHANGING WORK PROCEDURES, EXERCISING CAREER VALUES, GROUP CONFLICT, THE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION MOON SURVIVAL TASK, PARTICIPATIVE DECISIONMAKING, AND SURVIVAL TRAINING.
