CRITICAL APPRAISAL OF BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION AS AN INTERVENTION STRATEGY WITH OFFENDERS BASED ON A REVIEW OF EXISTING PROGRAMS AND THE AUTHOR'S OWN EXPERIENCE USING BEHAVIORAL PROGRAMS WITH INCARCERATED FEMALE JUVENILES.
Abstract
COMMENTS ARE LIMITED TO PROGRAMS WHICH USE AN OPERANT CONDITIONING APPROACH. THE DISCUSSION FOCUSES ON EFFICACY, CLIENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS, SELECTION OF TARGET BEHAVIORS, LIMITED AVAILABILITY AND POTENCY OF REINFORCERS, ADVERSE EFFECTS OF EXTINCTION PROCEDURES, AND THE CORRECTIONAL PROCLIVITY FOR PUNISHMENT. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT THE USE OF A BEHAVIORAL APPROACH IN A CORRECTIONAL SETTING ENCOUNTERS UNIQUE PROBLEMS BECAUSE OF POPULATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS PECULIAR TO THE SETTING.
