There has been little if any systematic investigation concerning how battered women perceive the police response. This research project was designed to address three general questions from the point of view of the woman victim: how helpful is the police response?; what are the police best and poorest at doing?; and how do male and female police officers differ in their responses?
Abstract
Residents of three shelters in Detroit, Michigan filled out a questionnaire on police response and were also interviewed. The results of the analysis of the resulting data are presented here and should be considered exploratory. (Author abstract)
