High-speed pursuits are a necessary part of police work; because National Crime Safety Council statistics show that police officers are more likely to be injured in an automobile accident than by violent criminals, refresher training to maintain driving skills is essential.
Abstract
In 1992, 304 persons were fatally injured in high-speed police pursuits. Only one fatality involved a police officer, while 224 occupants of chased vehicles died. Refresher training is essential to maintain police driving skills, although most police departments do not have the instructors or facilities available to conduct periodic driver retraining. Some schools teach police officers to be driving instructors, while other schools are specifically for police officers. Good schools provide both academic and hands-on training with vehicles used by the police officer's department. A description of six driving schools is provided: Scotti School of Defensive Driving, Track Time Driving Schools, Car Guys Inc., Driving Dynamics, Go4 It Services, Russell Racing School, and Jean Paul Luc Ice Driving School.
