This report presents summaries of the average daily prison population in California in 1992 by commitment type and institution.
Abstract
A table for the average daily prison population by type of commitment shows the average daily prison population for 1992 to have been 105,238, of which 98,722 were men and 6,516 were women. Of the average daily prison population for men, 95,589 were felons, 5,817 were civil narcotic addicts, and one was under the jurisdiction of the Youth Authority. Of the average daily prison population for women, 5,817 were women, 5,817 were civil narcotic addicts, and none were under the jurisdiction of the Youth Authority. Of the average daily 1992 prison population, 82,021 were in prison facilities, 13,071 were in reception centers, 4,136 were in camps, 5,617 were in community-based facilities, and 392 were in State hospitals. For male facilities, 5,100 were in level I community-based. For male institutions, 15,522 were in level I, 24,508 were in level II, 38,792 were in level III, and 14,800 were in level IV. Average daily populations are shown for each institution by commitment level. All population numbers are presented by quarter as well as by the year.
