This report presents findings on anti-Semitic incidents in the United States in 1994.
Abstract
In 1994 the total number of anti-Semitic incidents reported to the Anti-Defamation League, including acts against both property and persons, was 2,066, the first time the audit total has gone over 2,000. This total, drawn from reports from 46 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, is an increase of 199 incidents over the 1993 total of 1,867. The five States that reported the highest numbers of anti-Semitic incidents of all kinds in 1994 were New York (440), New Jersey (237), California (232), Florida (158), and Massachusetts (134). The most troubling finding of 1994 was the increase in violent, destructive, and, in one case, deadly incidents. Shootings, arson, and firebombings were more prevalent than in previous years. For the first time since 1991, anti-Semitic vandalism incidents increased. For the fourth straight year, acts of harassment against individuals outnumbered incidents of vandalism. The disturbing upward trend in campus anti-Semitic incidents continued. Data are provided on the various types of incidents, the number of arrests, and skinhead incidents. Tabular and graphic data are provided.
