Abstract
Witnesses include a Wayne County prosecuting attorney, the President of the National Association of Crime Victims Compensation Board, other local officials, and several criminal justice and sociology professors. Topics discussed relate to objectives of and alternatives to gun control; the effects of the Michigan Felony Firearm Law; the Attorney General's response to task force recommendations; of combating crime as an alternative to gun control; victimization of the young, the elderly, and minorities; and the relationship of Detroit's economic situation to crime rates. Other topics considered are comparisons of victim compensation program models, the impact of violent crime on victims, and the recommendations of a Detroit nonprofit organization ('New Detroit') for modification and strengthening of local gun control laws.
