DISCUSSION ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN 'ASSESSMENT CENTER' TECHNIQUE FOR INTERVIEWING POLICE APPLICANTS IN FORT WORTH, TEXAS.
Abstract
THE FORT WORTH, POLICE DEPATRMENT HAS IMPLEMENTED A ASSESSMENT CENTER APPROACH TO EVALUATE POLICE APPLICANTS. DESIGNED TO PROVIDE SPECIFIC CRITERIA FOR SELECTION, THE ASSESSMENT CENTER HAS REPLACED THE TRADITIONAL ORAL INTERVIEW PHASE OF THE PRE-EMPLOYMENT TESTING PROCEDURES. SIX APPLICANTS WHO HAVE SUCCESSFULLY PROGRESSED THROUGH THE INITIAL SCREENING TEST, VISION TEXT, JOB-RELATED STRENGTH AND AGILITY TEST, POLYGRAPH AND BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION, COMPLETE TOGETHER IN WORK SIMULATION EXERCISES, GROUP DISCUSSION, AND LEADERSHIP EXERCISES, AND INDIVIDUAL ORAL INTERVIEWS BETWEEN AN ASSESSOR AND AN APPLICANT. ALL WORK SIMULATION AND GROUP DISCUSSION EXERCISES DO NOT REQUIRE A THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF POLICE WORK BUT WERE DESIGNED TO PROVIDE ACCURATE INSIGHT INTO THE APPLICANTS ABILITY TO USE GOOD JUDGMENT, COMMON SENSE, LEADERSHIP, ORAL AND WRITTEN SKILLS, AND SENSITIVITY TO OTHERS.
