This is a summary of data on juvenile arrests in Wisconsin during the years 1988-1997.
Abstract
During the period 1992-1997, there was an average of 137,311 reported juvenile arrests each year in Wisconsin. In 1997, juvenile arrests accounted for 30.8 percent of all arrests made in the State. This document also contains tables showing 10-year trends of juvenile arrest data for the entire State and for Milwaukee County. Milwaukee County data are presented separately because of the high population in the county and because arrest rates in the county differ considerably from the rest of the State. During the years 1988-1997, the total number of juvenile arrests increased by 63 percent, from 88,959 to 145,040. Juvenile arrest rates, the number of arrests per 100,000 residents, increased each year except 1997. The document presents data concerning: index offense arrests; geographic distribution of violent index offense arrest rates; offense distribution of arrests; juvenile offender characteristics; and Wisconsin juvenile arrests compared with the rest of the country.
