Abstract
During the 10-year period the number of juvenile arrests for Index offenses increased by 24.5 percent. Ninety-three percent of the juvenile arrests for Index Offenses in Wisconsin were for property crimes. Juvenile arrests for property crimes increased by 21.7 percent over the decade, while juvenile arrests for violent crimes increased by 76 percent. Milwaukee County had a higher proportion of juvenile arrests for violent offenses than did the rest of Wisconsin. The rate of total juvenile male arrests in 1996 was nearly 2.5 times that of females. White juveniles accounted for nearly 80 percent of total juvenile arrests; black, American Indian, and Asian American juveniles had higher total rates. Wisconsin's total juvenile arrest rate is more than 2.5 times the national average. Figures and tables
