Staff associations of the police in the United Kingdom have initiated an examination of the needed staffing levels of the police, the growing problem of public criticism of the police, the future of traditional beat policing, and the potential threat of the growing use of private police.
Abstract
Planned increases in staffing levels are inadequate to meet the needs for normal commitments and thus cannot cope with emergencies either. In addition, public confidence in the police has declined. To deal with this issue, the police service needs to conduct an internal debate regarding what the police are doing and how effectively they are doing it. The potential growing role of private police also needs to be considered. The police service should not ignore the growing use of private security firms and the changes that this use suggests for the future of policing.
