This booklet presents descriptions of the architectural design and supplies construction data for 43 criminal justice facilities in 24 States judged by the 1991 American Institute of Architects/American Correctional Association Exhibition of Architecture for Justice Jury to be worthy of exhibition.
Abstract
For each facility, an architect's statement describes the design qualities and intent for the facility. Also included are a photograph or architectural drawing of the facility; a site plan; a floor plan; a list of professional staff involved in the construction; and data for site area, building area, construction cost, and year completed. Among the types of facilities exhibited are State courts buildings, reception centers, police buildings, jails, a multi-classification facility for women, women's correctional facilities, Federal courthouses, regional medical facilities, residential facilities, Federal correctional complexes, special needs facilities, public safety centers, sheriff's administration buildings, prerelease centers, and county justice centers. The jury accepted projects for exhibit that demonstrate an overall regard for design and the surrounding environment, as well as those that generally comply with life safety codes and the standards of the American Correctional Association or other jurisdictions. The jury was disturbed by the rising cost of construction and noted that in some instances site preparation costs were significantly higher for rural and suburban sites. The jury recommends that more consideration be given to urban sites, which might prove more cost effective. Index of architects
