This handbook on child maltreatment, developed by the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, addresses all facets of the professional response to child abuse and neglect: prevention, assessment, intervention, and treatment.
Abstract
Handbook contributors represent major disciplines involved in responding to child abuse and neglect, including mental health, legal, medical, child protective service, and law enforcement professionals. The handbook covers emotional neglect, psychological maltreatment, and physical and sexual abuse. Handbook chapters, based on empirical research, are organized in six parts: (1) overview of child maltreatment--neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological maltreatment, and ritualistic abuse; (2) psychosocial treatment--integrated model of psychotherapy, abused adolescents, self-trauma model for treating adult survivors of severe child abuse, intervention with maltreating families, and sex offenders; (3) medical aspects of child abuse; (4) legal aspects of child abuse; (5) child abuse prevention and reporting; and (6) service organization and delivery. Child abuse is viewed as a moral transformation, and challenges faced by professionals who deal with child abuse and neglect are discussed. References, notes, tables, figures, and photographs
