This document provides 32 anatomical line drawings by a medical illustrator together with brief guidelines for their use in child sexual abuse investigation and intervention.
Abstract
The drawings depict back and front views of both black and white males and females at four age levels: preschool child, grammar school child, adolescent, and adult. Use of reproductions of the drawings with clients can help overcome limitations in the victim's vocabulary for sexual areas of the body and sexual activities and provide an unambiguous understanding of the known or suspected abuse. The drawings may be used to clarify the child's terminology, provide clues to the offender's characteristics, and elucidate the kinds of sexual activities involved. They also may be used to assess the child's exposure to or involvement in child pornography. Labeled drawings marked by the victim to depict the body areas involved in an incident also may be submitted in evidence in civil and criminal cases. Finally, the drawings may be used independently or in conjunction with anatomically correct dolls, puppets, and other intervention techniques.
