A BRIEF ASSESSMENT OF THE LITERATURE ON SEXUAL ASSAULT IS PRESENTED, AND PRIORITIES FOR FUTURE RESEARCH ARE RECOMMENDED.
Abstract
A REVIEW OF SOME 1,500 BOOKS AND ARTICLES REVEALED A SHIFT IN ATTITUDES TOWARD THE VICTIMS OF SEXUAL ASSAULT. TREATMENT PROGRAMS FOR SEXUAL OFFENDERS TEND TO USE GROUP THERAPY AND BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION, WITH A DEVELOPING TREND TOWARD COGNITIVE PROGRAMMING. A TECHNOLOGY FOR ASSESSING AND TREATING SEXUAL OFFENDERS IS EMERGING. SUBSTANTIAL OR PERVASIVE FLAWS IN RESEARCH DESIGN, PROCEDURES, DATA ANALYSIS, OR INTERPRETATION WERE FOUND IN OVER 90 PERCENT OF THE RESEARCH STUDIES REVIEWED. A TENDENCY TOWARD REDUNDANCY WAS ALSO NOTED. LITERATURE FROM CRIMINAL JUSTICE AGENCIES IS BASICALLY DESCRIPTIVE RATHER THAN CRITICAL OR ANALYTICAL. SUCH DESCRIPTIVE REPORTS, THOUGH OF USE AS AN INFORMATION BASE, FAIL TO PROVIDE KEY INFORMATION ON PROGRAM EVALUATION, RESULTS OF COMPARATIVE PROGRAMS OR POLICY EFFORTS, AND ASSESSMENT OF OUTCOMES. A NUMBER OF MYTHS RELATING TO RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT HAVE BEGUN TO BE CHALLENGED. FURTHER RESEARCH IS NEEDED ON SITUATIONAL DETERMINANTS AND INFLUENCES, RAPE WITHIN MARRIAGE, REPORTING OF SEXUAL ASSAULT, PREVENTION METHODS, RAPE IN INSTITUTIONS, ALCOHOL USE AND RAPE, SERVICE DELIVERY MODELS, APPLICATION OF EXISTING KNOWLEDGE, THE MALE VICTIM, AND FEEDBACK MECHANISMS.
