THE FINDINGS OF A SURVEY OF AUSTRALIAN CRIMINOLOGY LIBRARIES, UNDERTAKEN IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE SEMINAR, ARE SUMMARIZED.
Abstract
THE LIBRARIES SURVEYED INCLUDE UNIVERSITY COLLECTIONS ON CRIMINOLOGY, COLLECTIONS SERVING CORRECTIONAL AND OTHER GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, POLICE COLLEGE/ACADEMY LIBRARIES, LAW LIBRARIES, AND THE LIBRARY OF THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY. THE SURVEY FOUND THAT MANY OF THE LIBRARIES HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED RELATIVELY RECENTLY (1970 OR LATER), THAT STAFF SHORTAGES ARE COMMON, AND THAT LIBRARIANS TEND TO BE UNCERTAIN ABOUT THEIR BUDGETS. THE SURVEY ALSO INDICATED THAT THE RANGE OF SERVICES AND DEPTH OF INFORMATION AVAILABLE IN AUSTRALIA'S CRIMINOLOGY LIBRARIES ARE GREATER THAN MIGHT HAVE BEEN EXPECTED. A TABLE PRESENTS INFORMATION ON THE LOCATION, YEAR OF ESTABLISHMENT, STAFF SIZE, STRUCTURE, AND SPECIAL FEATURES OF 18 LIBRARIES. (LKM)
