This report presents preliminary return-to-custody evaluation outcome data as of April 1995 for the first 290 male research participants paroled from California Department of Corrections (CDC) prisons, including the R. J. Donovan Correctional Facility at San Diego, and were on parole at least 12 months.

Abstract

Inmates participated in the Amity Therapeutic Community Program at the R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility for approximately 12 months. Upon parole, some participants continued treatment in the Amity Community Aftercare Residential Facility in Vista, Calif. Data in this report describe only those parolees who returned one or more days to a CDC facility. Both of these treatment groups had significantly lower return-to-custody rates than a control (no treatment) group and a Prison Program Drop group. These data are consistent with drug treatment research findings which show that longer treatment stays are associated with more positive outcomes in recovery. Tables, figures
