INTENDED AS AN INITIAL RESOURCE, THE MATERIAL INCLUDED IN THIS KIT IS DESIGNED TO INCREASE AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING ABOUT SOME ASPECTS OF CRIMINAL PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS. THE KIT IS FROM A THREE-PHASE PROGRAM.
Abstract
THE MATERIALS CAN BE RESTRUCTURED FOR VARIOUS TYPES OF GROUPS, ACCORDING TO SIZE, AGE, AND LENGTH OF TIME. THIS FIRST PHASE IS DESIGNED TO INTEREST, MOTIVATE, AND INFORM. IT SEEKS TO BUILD A BACKGROUND OF INFORMATION AND CHANGE ATTITUDES OF ORDINARY CITIZENS. A POSTER AND SEVERAL BROCHURES ABOUT ALTERNATIVES TO JAIL, SUCH AS PROGRAMS WITHIN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY, ARE INCLUDED. FACTS AND MYTHS ARE ILLUSTRATED IN A BOOKLET DESIGNED TO BE USED AT THE FIRST MEETING OF THE PROGRAM. THE CARTOONS ACCENT SPECIFIC FACTS AND POINT OUT THE NEED FOR LEARNING BEFORE DOING. AN AUDIOCASSETTE WITH THE MAIN THEME OF CARING FOLLOWS, ALONG WITH A STUDY GUIDE. ATTITUDES AND BELIEFS ABOUT JUSTICE AND CORRECTIONS ARE HIGHLIGHTED IN THE NEXT SECTION USING A SIMULATION GAME INVOLVING ROLE PLAYING. PARTICIPANTS ASSUME VARIOUS ROLES IN A TRIAL, SUCH AS THE DEFENDANT OR AS MEMBERS OF A 'SENTENCING COUNCIL.' TWO MORE AUDIOCASSETTES FOLLOW, EACH INVOLVING A CASE HISTORY AND GROUP PARTICIPATION. GUIDELINES ARE INCLUDED WITH EACH CASSETTE. THIS COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT PROGRAM WAS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN IN OCTOBER 1976. AN INDEX IS INCLUDED. (PRG)
