One of the most effective means of working with abusers in domestic violence cases is through battering intervention groups, and this workbook is designed to help counselors recognize and deal with the issues underlying the behavior of abusers.
Abstract
The workbook is specifically intended for use by psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors involved in battering intervention programs. Teachers may also find it useful as a supplemental text for graduate classes in psychology and counseling. Each technique presented in the workbook has been tested in actual groups, and the techniques are patterned after the Duluth Model. Workbook topics include defining abuse, creating trusting relationships, giving and receiving respect, taking responsibility for actions, creating effective communication, maintaining positive sexual relationships, negotiating partnerships, and improving relationships between parents and children. The workbook includes case studies and exercises to stimulate active participation by group members. 16 references
