This comprehensive State statistical reference book provides a general statistical overview and profile of every State, along with tables of comparative ranking.
Abstract
The book is divided into two parts. The first part, State Profiles, consists of 52 individual profile sections: one for each of the 50 States, one for the District of Columbia, and one for the United States in summary. Each of these profiles is eight pages in length; each uses the same format organized into 13 subject categories; and each has been compiled from the same sources of information. Data cover geography and environment; demographics and population characteristics; vital statistics and health; education; social insurance and welfare programs; housing and construction; government and elections; governmental finance; crime, law enforcement, and courts; labor and income; economy, business, industry, and agriculture; and communication, energy, and transportation. The statistics on crime, law enforcement, and courts address the crime rate for 1996, total crimes, overall crime rate, each Index offense, the number of police agencies, arrests (including juvenile arrests), prisoners under State and Federal jurisdiction, persons under sentence of death, and data on the State's highest court. The data come from the latest reports of Federal Government agencies, augmented with data from business and trade organizations. The second part of the book, Comparative Tables, is composed of tables of ranking. The 54 tables each list the States in rank order for a selected characteristic chosen from the State profiles.
