THIS STUDY FOUND THAT INCIDENCES OF VIOLENT CRIME IN AN INDUSTRIALIZED AREA OF ONTARIO POSITIVELY CORRELATED WITH ALCOHOL SALES TO LICENSED ESTABLISHMENTS AND NEGATIVELY WITH MEAN INCOME AND OWNER-OCCUPIED DWELLINGS.
Abstract
RESEARCHERS OBTAINED DATA ON REPORTED VIOLENT CRIMES FROM THE HAMILTON-WENTWORTH REGIONAL POLICE. THEY EVALUATED SALES REPORTS FROM THE LIQUOR CONTROL BOARD OF ONTARIO AND BREWERS' WAREHOUSING, DATA ON SEX AND AGE DISTRIBUTION, PROPORTION OF OWNER-OCCUPIED DWELLINGS, POPULATION DENSITY FROM THE REGIONAL PLANNING DEPARTMENT, AND MEAN FAMILY INCOME DATA CALCULATED FROM THE 1971 CENSUS AND THE 1975 TAX ENUMERATON. MULTIPLE REGRESSION WAS USED TO EXAMINE THE EFFECT OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION ON RATES OF HOMICIDE, ASSAULTS, RAPES, SEXUAL ASSAULTS, AND THREATENING BEHAVIOR IN 18 GEOGRAPHIC AREAS WITH A POPULATION OF 259,000 OVER 18, THE DRINKING AGE. IT WAS CONCLUDED FROM THE FINDINGS THAT CONSUMPTION IN LICENSED ESTABLISHMENTS IN AN AREA IS HIGHLY ASSOCIATED WUTH THE VIOLENT CRIME RATE IN THAT AREA. THE STUDY RECOMMENDED FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE LIKELIHOOD OF ALCOHOLIC INVOLVEMENT AND THE SEVERITY OF PHYSICAL DAMAGE. TABLES AND EIGHT REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED.
