Abstract
The course focuses on concepts that educators within the school setting need in order to participate effectively in alcohol and other drug prevention programs in their schools and communities. The course is designed as a three-unit semester course with 45 contact hours, including an on-site visit to a 12-step recovery meeting. Each of the 12 sessions has specific learner outcomes with corresponding text and classroom activities. The first sessions focus on the effects and consequences of alcohol and other drug use on adolescents, their families, and the schools. The second half of the course concentrates on factors underlying alcohol and other drug use, and the role of schools in the prevention and intervention of their use. The course emphasizes that the use of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs is unhealthy and harmful, and that it affects students' ability to interact with the learning environment. 76 references
