This report presents several articles encompassing various aspects of the Alaskan criminal justice system.
Abstract
This quarterly report provides specific information on the justice system in the State of Alaska. The report features several articles of interest. The first provides an overview of justice system expenditures from 1984 to 2001 for Alaska’s Court System, Department of Law, Department of Public Safety, and Department of Corrections. A significant portion of the overall increase in justice system expenditures was attributed to the increase in the budget for the Department of Corrections. The second featured article examines legal sanctions for gun crime in Anchorage, Alaska in terms of how such sanctions are perceived by the general public. These perceptions of criminal sanctions are seen as integral to deterrence. The data show that the level of perceived deterrence is not uniform with individuals assigning different probabilities to each state of the criminal justice process. Additional articles addressed incarcerated parents in Alaska prisons and the loss and restoration of voting rights for those convicted of a felony in Alaska.
