In terms of total numbers of cases reported, Canada has the ninth highest incidence of AIDS in the world.
Abstract
Canada is a so-called Pattern One Country in terms of AIDS incidence; that is, those countries in which the most cases occur among homosexual/bisexual males and urban injection drug users. Since the reporting of the first case of AIDS, the National Health and Welfare agency has played a major role in the prevention and control of the spread of HIV infection and AIDS. Some prevention and control measures, such as information and education, and biomedical research and laboratory services, have been formulated into a policy framework which provides a visible and consistent guide to future Federal actions as well as providing coordinated rationale for Federal decision making. The five essential elements of the Federal policy are prevention and control, public awareness and education, reduction of impacts on individuals, support to community-based action, and coordination and collaboration at the international, national, provincial, and local levels. The next major objective in the near future is to bring under control the spread of HIV among injection drug users. 4 references.
