This manual provides a comprehensive overview for those exposed to the acquired immune deficiency (AIDS) virus, those with AIDS, and those grieving for victims of AIDS.
Abstract
Following a discussion of AIDS and facts and myths about the disease and its transmission, the psychosocial needs of AIDS victims and their friends and families are discussed. Employment issues also are examined. Medical data on AIDS are provided, including information of AIDS-related infections and malignancies, AIDS related complex, and approaches to treatment. A section on prevention discusses risk factors, provides safe sex guidelines, and discusses alcohol and drug use. Self-care information covers nutrition and exercise, dental care, general hygiene and risk reduction, and symptom management. Practical issues in dealing with AIDS are discussed, including social services, benefits, wills and powers of attorney, and insurance (health, disability, and life). Also covered are spiritual and pastoral care issues and resources. Two personal accounts by AIDS victims highlight the importance of life-enhancing acceptance and love in the face of death. Finally, appendixes contain a glossary; self-care forms and charts; and lists of books, tapes, and AIDS-related organizations and hotlines. Index.
