This bulletin explains the nature and transmission of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and gives guidelines for use by police officers and others in protecting themselves against the disease and handling people who may have AIDS or any other transmissible disease.
Abstract
The bulletin includes a definition, the tests used, the categories of diseases that may affect persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus, and the four methods of transmission. Specific steps to use in preventing the spread of any infectious disease are covered, with emphasis on washing hands, handling sharp objects cautiously, and general cleaning. An outline of legal issues covers confidentiality, a proposed law on notification, the legal duties of emergency workers, and county and department policy. List of hotlines, resource organizations, and publications and summary of studies showing the lack of AID virus transmission among family member contacts of AIDS victims.
