This is the FY 2000 Profile and Annual Report from the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.
Abstract
The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) is the lead public health agency responsible for implementing the health-related provisions of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA, also known as Superfund). ATSDR's primary goals are to identify people at risk because of exposure to uncontrolled hazardous substances in the environment; to evaluate relationships between hazardous substances in the environment and adverse human health outcomes; and to intervene to eliminate exposure of health concern and reduce or prevent harmful health effects related to release of hazardous substances in the environment. During FY 2000, ATSDR analyzed demographic data for 225 sites where the agency conducted public health assessments or consultations. ATSDR aided State health officials in the Chicago area, where an estimated 500,000 homes were potentially contaminated with mercury as a result of the removal of old natural gas meters containing mercury. ATSDR also worked with public health officials in Ottawa County, OK, to create a lead poisoning prevention program. Figures, appendixes, index
