The United Nations (UN) Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice met in April-May 1997 to formulate a provisional agenda and organize its work.
Abstract
The meeting focused on promoting the rule of law and good governance, anticorruption measures, criminal justice reform, the strengthening of legal institutions, international cooperation to combat transnational crime, and crime prevention strategies, particularly in urban areas and in the context of public security. The meeting also considered the application of UN standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice, technical cooperation, and strategic management. In particular, topics of interest included international cooperation and assistance in criminal justice system management, the computerization of criminal justice operations, the analysis and policy use of crime and criminal justice information, and implementation of the Naples Political Declaration and Global Action Plan Against Organized Transnational Crime. Other topics concerned extradition and international cooperation in criminal matters, illegal migrant smuggling, illegal motor vehicle trafficking, the role of criminal law in environmental protection, and illegal trafficking in children. An annex lists members of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
