During August 1987, 13 firearms instructors, including representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, evaluated nine semiautomatic pistols: the .45 caliber Smith and Wesson M645 and Sig-Sauer P220; and the 9mm Sig-Sauer M459, Smith and Wesson M459, Beretta M92, Glock Models 17 and 19, Ruger P85, and IMI AT84.
Abstract
Weapons were evaluated for design approach; ease of care, maintenance, operation, and use; freedom from breakdowns; parts availability; safety; delivery, resistance to breakage; and reputation and integrity of the vendor. Each weapon was evaluated independently on its own merits using a point system with a maximum possible 750 points. Highest ratings were achieved by the Smith and Wesson M645 (730 points), the Sig-Sauer P226 (710), the Smith and Wesson M459 (705), and the Beretta M92. Appendixes include scoring data; discussions of wound ballistics, ammunition selection criteria, and incapacitation of human targets; tables; and a rating form. 23 footnotes.
