This booklet presents facts on adolescent alcohol addiction.
Abstract
It identifies the symptoms and causes of adolescent alcohol abuse; discusses the minimum drinking age, juvenile drunk driving, and the mixing of alcohol and other drugs; and describes school education, prevention, and treatment programs. It notes that studies indicate that persons ingesting alcohol at an early age are at high risk of becoming chronic alcoholics and severly damaging psychological and physiological abilities. The juvenile alcohol abuser is characterized by erratic, impulsive, and self-destructive behavior. Particular problems associated with juvenile alcohol abuse are drunk driving and the dangerous mixing of alcohol with other drugs. Schools can play an important role in addressing juvenile alcohol abuse by educating students in the nature of alcohol and the consequences of its abuse, using affective as well as cognitive learning methods. Teaching should include a combination of course work, values clarification, and field experiences, coupled with individual, group, and peer counseling. 48-item selected bibliography.
