A total of 938 juvenile males and 92 juvenile females were admitted to Wisconsin juvenile correctional institutions in 1979, compared with 1,278 males and 184 females in 1978.
Abstract
The 29.5 percent decline in admissions is attributable to the State's new Children's Code (effective November 1978), which provides for community-based treatment of juvenile offenders not endangering themselves or the public. Among the boys admitted, 563 were new admissions; 178 were returns from aftercare; 163 were returns from aftercare pending a revocation hearing, and 33 were temporary admissions. Among the girls, 50 were new admissions, 17 were returns from aftercare, 22 were returns pending a revocation hearing; and 3 were temporary admissions from probation. Nearly one-half of the juveniles admitted came from the seven counties which comprise the Milwaukee and Southeastern regions. The median age of boys was 16.5 years and 16.2 years for girls. The bulk of the report comprises tabular data.
