This report presents statistics on New York State inmate admissions and releases for calendar year 1992.
Abstract
The inmate population in New York State facilities increased by 3,874 inmates (6.7 percent) from the end of December 1991 to the end of December 1992. The number of State inmates was 1,340 at the close of December 1992 compared to 2,355 at the close of December 1991. At the end of December 1992, pending felony cases stood at 24,754, up 1.3 percent from the previous year. The number of felons convicted but still awaiting sentencing was 9,842. These cases could represent additional commitments to prisons. Total admissions for January through December 1992 were 32,230, an 8-percent increase over the 29,831 recorded for 1991. Court commitments increased by 1,038 (4.3 percent), from 24,115 to 25,153. Returned parole violators increased by 1,240 (39.8 percent), and conditional release violators increased by 47 (18.6 percent). Other admissions increased from 2,344 to 2,418 (3.2 percent). There were 28,342 inmates released from State facilities during 1992, which was 1,473 (5.5 percent) more than the 26,869 released in 1991. Paroles accounted for 20,302 of the releases compared to 19,394 for 1991, up by 908 (4.6 percent). 7 exhibits
