Abuse of the elderly has been recognized as a problem only relatively recently, but practitioners are now better prepared to address this problem with the help of standardized assessment and detection techniques and multi-agency communication and service networks.
Abstract
Thus, professionals are more comfortable about asking their clients about possible abuse, consulting with health care providers to obtain the necessary tests to determine the abuse, and determining the elderly person's competency and capability. Professional cooperation is also improving, and adult protective services are becoming increasingly professionalized. Further needs include a greater variety of treatment approaches and more research on causes of mistreatment. 18 references.
