This article examines the influence of team-based management on probation and pretrial services supervisors.
Abstract
In Federal probation and pretrial services offices team-based management has radically changed the role of supervisory staff. Teams of employees gradually assume responsibility for controlling and coordinating their own work, including quality control traditionally managed by the supervisor. The new approach encourages supervisors to use their skills, and to develop new ones, to help employees work together more effectively. Responsibilities for supervisory probation officers as team builders include: (1) creating an environment for quality improvement of work processes; (2) assigning and scheduling investigative and supervisory work; (3) reviewing presentence investigations; (4) setting up team meetings; (5) participating in goal setting and strategic planning; (6) ensuring staff compliance with the Judicial Code of Conduct; (7) evaluating the performance of team members on a systematic basis; and (8) initiating adverse personnel actions and processing grievances.
