As part of New York's comprehensive acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) risk reduction effort, this manual provides strategies for a program-wide approach to AIDS prevention for substance abuse treatment programs.

Abstract

The critical role of intravenous (IV) drug abuse in the transmission of AIDS in the State is discussed, and the role of drug treatment programs in prevention among the high-risk IV drug-using population is delineated. The domains and levels, as well as the goals of prevention, are described; guidelines are offered for creating a climate of prevention in the treatment setting. Issues related to administrative policy, staff education, and intervention in preventive efforts also are discussed. Suggestions for implementing five strategies are provided. These strategies include client task forces, women's groups, AIDS awareness days, health fairs, and workshops. Appendixes provide additional information on surveillance and client education, glossary, and resource guide. 12 references.
