PREPARED FOR THE USE OF THE JOINT ECONOMIC COMMITTEE OF THE U.S. CONGRESS, THIS STUDY EVALUATES THE LONG-TERM AND AGGREGATIVE IMPACT ON SOCIETY OF CHANGES IN INCOME, PRICES, AND EMPLOYMENT.
Abstract
TO ANALYZE THE EFFECTS OF THE ECONOMY ON SOCIAL PROBLEMS, THIS STUDY EXAMINED THE RELATIONSHIPS OF THREE ECONOMIC INDICATORS (NATIONAL INCOME, INFLATION, AND UNEMPLOYMENT) ON SIX INDICES OF SOCIAL PATHOLOGY - CARDIOVASCULAR-RENAL DISEASE, CIRRHOSIS OF THE LIVER, SUICIDE, MENTAL ILLNESS, HOMICIDES, AND THE RATE OF IMPRISONMENT. THE STUDY REVEALED THAT ALL OF THESE STRESS INDICATORS ARE DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY CHANGES IN THE THREE NATIONAL ECONOMIC VARIABLES. CHANGES IN THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE WERE FOUND TO HAVE THE MOST PROFOUND IMPACT OF THE THREE VARIABLES.
