AFTER COMPLETING THE TRAINING UNIT OF WHICH THIS MANUAL IS A PART, THE LEARNER SHOULD BE ABLE TO MANAGE MONEY BY UNDERSTANDING THE NATURE OF A BUDGET, BY INCLUDING ALL INCOME IN THE BUDGET, AND BY LISTING FIRST ALL FIXED EXPENSES AND THEN ALL FLEXIBLE EXPENSES. THE MANUAL INCLUDES A LIST OF LEARNING GOALS AND SUBGOALS, DIRECTIONS FOR USING THE MANUAL, UNIT PRETEST AND POSTTEST, STEP-BY-STEP DIRECTIONS FOR DEVELOPING A PERSONAL BUDGET, REVIEW QUESTIONS, TEST KEY, WORD LIST, SAMPLE BUDGET, AND SPACE FOR TEACHER'S NOTES. THE MANUAL IS PART OF A CURRICULUM MATERIALS PACKAGE DEVELOPED AS PART OF A DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM WAS IMPLEMENTED IN FOUR LOCAL JAILS BY THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION IN 1979. THE PROGRAM, TITLED COORDINATED COMMUNITY OFFENDER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS WAS FUNDED BY A LEAA GRANT. PROGRAM GOAL IS TO INCREASE INMATES' EMPLOYABILITY AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES BY TEACHING CONSUMER AND LIFE SKILLS NEEDED TO COPE IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY AS WELL AS SKILLS RELATED TO LOCATING AND FINDING EMPLOYMENT. ALTHOUGH DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR ADULT INMATES IN CITY AND COUNTY JAILS, THE PROGRAM CAN BE ADAPTED TO JUVENILE AND TO OTHER TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS. FOR OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE TRAINING MATERIALS PACKAGE, SEE NCJ 63908-63916 AND 63918-63925. (CFW)
