Abstract
AFTER COMPLETING THE TRAINING UNIT, THE LEARNER SHOULD BE ABLE TO RECOGNIZE SOME BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT HOUSING. SPECIFIC TASKS ARE TO IDENTIFY ADVANTAGES OF RENTING AND OF BUYING, TO IDENTIFY HOUSING COSTS AND INFORMATION NEEDED WHEN ASKING ABOUT AN APARTMENT OR HOUSE, AND TO UTILIZE THE LOCAL HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT (HUD) OFFICE FOR QUESTIONS ABOUT LOCAL HOUSING. THE MANUAL INCLUDES A LIST OF GOALS AND SUBGOALS, DIRECTIONS FOR USING THE MANUAL, UNIT PRETEST AND POSTTEST, ILLUSTRATED EXPLANATIONS OF INFORMATION ON PROVIDING FOR HOUSING NEEDS, REVIEW QUESTIONS, UNIT TEST KEY, AND WORD LIST. THE MANUAL IS PART OF A CURRICULUM MATERIALS PACKAGE DEVELOPED BY THE AMERICAN CORRECTIONAL ASSOCIATION (ACA) AS PART OF A DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM, FUNDED BY A LEAA GRANT, WAS IMPLEMENTED IN FOUR LOCAL JAILS IN 1979. TITLED COORDINATED COMMUNITY OFFENDER EMPLOYMENT PROGRAMS, (CCOEP), IT IS DESIGNED TO INCREASE INMATES' EMPLOYABILITY AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES BY TEACHING CONSUMER AND LIFE SKILLS NEEDED TO COPE IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY AS WELL AS SKILLS RELATED TO LOCATING AND FINDING EMPLOYMENT. ALTHOUGH DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR ADULT INMATES IN CITY AND COUNTY JAILS, THE PROGRAM CAN BE ADAPTED TO JUVENILES AND TO OTHER TYPES OF INSTITUTIONS. FOR OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE TRAINING MATERIALS PACKAGE, SEE NCJ 63908-21, AND 63923-25. (CFW)
